The National Association for Music Education (NAfME) has designated March as Music in Our Schools Month. I am proud to be both a product of (professional trumpet player) and to have developed a product for (ChopSaver) school music education.
I grew up in Elkhart, Indiana. It was a great town in which to grow up, especially for a budding young musician. All of the local schools had strong music programs with good band directors at the helm. It probably had something to do with the fact that Elkhart was once known as the “Band Instrument Capital of The World.”
One might call Indianapolis, Indiana, where I’m from, Marching Band Mecca. Lucas Oil Stadium is not only home to the Indianapolis Colts NFL team, it is also the home of the Bands of America Grand National Championships sponsored by Music for All.

Recently, I had a chance to speak to a group of young musicians. It was actually a youth orchestra and there were many aspiring professional musicians in the group. As a professional trumpet player turned business man, my message to them was simple. The skills one learns as a musician can be applied to careers outside of music.
